Cities with the most non-car commuters compiled from the 2000 census. Big markers are for cities with a population over 250k. Small markers are for cities with a population of 50k to 250k. The darker the marker, the more non-car commuters: cities with over 1/3 non-car commuters are brown, those with at least 1/4 are golden, those with over 1/5 are yellow. Note that some of these might be non-walkable bedroom communities. Also, this list does not reflect crime rates (i.e. how safe it is to walk around), whether there are sidewalks, whether you'd need a car to go grocery shopping or go out, whether people walk or take mass transit or what their commute times are (e.g. chances are, many non-car commuters from White Plains commute into New York City and those from Oak Park and Evanston commute to Chicago). And of course for some of these places it might be the case that non-car commuters could really use a car, but simply cannot afford one (Atlanta, Georgia, for example, is not a pedestrian-friendly place from what I hear, and yet it made this map).
